Gunter's Gasthaus at Kota Kinabalu

Gunter’s Gasthaus is a Germany’s food restaurant in Kota Kinabalu Sabah. Well, I never try or even see a germany’s food but from the name of the restaurant, Gunter’s Gasthaus mean Gunter’s Inn in German. Gunter’s Gasthaus is a home style restaurant. It is decorated with lots of flowers and leaf. Some of those is real but some are fake plants. I feel that the environment of this restaurant is good and relaxing. It is located along Jalan Tuaran.

You will see this huge signboard at the road side. So don’t worry that you can’t find it.

Home style restaurant.

Inside the restaurant.

So what is the special thing about this restaurant? At Gunter’s Gasthaus, there is a pakage that you only need to pay for the most expensive dish but limited to 3 dishes per person. Below are some of the dishes I have tried.

The vegetable salad is free. You can take as much as you like while waiting for the dishes you order.

Mushroom casserole

Spaghetti

Serbian Style Sausage

Grill chicken

Fish fillet

Fish fillet with oyster

Among all those 6 dishes, the grill chicken and the Serbian Style Sausage are the most expensive dishes which cause RM20.00 each. So the total for this meal is RM40.00 excluded government tax and service charge for two person. My opinion is that the food worth the price and you should give it a try when you visit Kota Kinabalu.

Sadly, Mr Gunther Mathias passed away on Sunday January 19, 2009.

He will be missed, and KK's culinary scene is poorer for it...

Check out my blog for a scan of his obituary.

The restaurant's still open; I was there for dinner last week.

However it seems whoever is in charge now does not adhere to the high customer service standard Gunter used to abide by.

I went there on Feb 13th for dinner (the second time since Gunter passed), and I arrived 10 minutes before 8 as we wanted to take advantage of the 'tambah' deal. However, the lady who served us said although we can choose items from the 'tambah' menu, they can not let us 'tambah' for free for the subsequent orders. I think that's prosposterous as we arrived before 8, and its clearly stated as available from 6:30 to 8.

Gunter would have honoured the deal is he's still alive.

And they're now closed for two weeks starting Feb 15, so they should be re-=opened on march 1st or 2nd. I have a feeling there may be a change of ownership, or at least the operations team when it re-opens. I'll check it out again next month.

Things have sure changed at Gunters. The poor German will not RIP, if he knows how his place is being run now.

It was my wife's birthday yesterday, i called early to confirm that they are open. we came early at about 6:45pm. A bunch of Bank Staff were already there, so they occupied most of the place. So the waitress stopped us from going inside the aircond area.. that was fine, so we looked outside the open area.

The waitress turn her head looked elsewhere and said "thank you come again .. in their typical type slang".. That is even before we decided where to sit.. Sigh... feel like kena halau and unwelcomed..

We feel unwanted so we left .. and found a much better place at "Four Seasons" Damai nearby. We may not be able to "Tambah-tambah" but the food is definitely nice and different.

sigh... poor fellow gone too fast..

I've been there one more time since my last post above, and that will be the last time I'll ever goto Gunter's ever again.

While the 'tambah' menu was still there, the portions have shrunk to a ridiculous level. When Gunter was alive, I could hardly finish the second serving; but this time I was still hungry after 3 servings.

I wolfed down the first serving in like 30 seconds (seriously it was so little!) and had to wait like 20 minutes before the second serving arrived, which I again wolfed down in less then a minute. Then its another 20 minutes wait for the 3rd serving.

Gunter must be turning and tossing in his grave if he knew how his beloved lace is being run to the ground now...

Wow...I haven been there since i knew the news of Mr Gunther Mathias pass away...Last week got a thought of go there and have a try then change my mind in the end. Seem like making a right choice then.. Well, still might go and have a try someday when the mood come and see will it be my last visit if the quality is really that bad....

i went there with my family after calling them for the eat all u can for RM8.88 and above depending on what u order. after arriving there we ordered our food which took 30mins to arrive after eating it i asked for the menu to order another dish but the waiter said the eat all u can finishes at 8pm although they don't tell u that prior to going there nor do they mentioned it on the menu. basically i was cheated and after trying to pay for the meal with a credit card they will charge u 2.5%on top of your bill as if the meal was cheap. the food was ok but i felt cheated n will not return there any time soon.
